Updated for Patch 2.0.0.l
With patch 18.104.22.168, Bungie has reduced the number of materials you get per drop. It seems that the material drop rate has been reduced by 50%, meaning you’ll get half the amount of materials you where getting before the patch. I have updated the drop list at the end of the article to reflect these changes. I’ve also added the new planetary materials from The Tangled Shore and The Dreaming City.
With the release of patch 2.0 (the Forsaken patch), quite a lot of things have changed in Destiny 2. One of those things is the way that infusion works. You can no longer just infuse a higher piece of gear in to a lower piece of gear, you need something a little bit extra. Planetary materials.
Planetary materials wehre somewhat useless in vanilla Destiny 2, apart from from ranking up planetary vendors. But, now it looks like they will serve more of a purpose. This means that the grind for planetary materials is back, much like it was in Destiny 1.
This guide will show any newcomers to Destiny 2 Forsaken where to acquire each planetary material, and some ways to farm for them.
When you are out on patrol farming for planetary materials, you will probably notice that some will drop as rare(blue) as opposed to the more common green variety. From what I can gather, you will only need the common green materials to infuse your gear. The rare materials will still drop, whether they will have another purpose other than vendor ranks is unknown.

Farming for Planetary Materials
There are a few things you can do to make collecting planetary materials a bit quicker and more efficient.
The main thing to use when farming for planetary materials is your trusty companion, Ghost.
Every ghost has a chance to roll with a Resource Detector perk, there are also specific ghost shells for each planet which will come with the Resource Detector perk.
These ghost shells are invaluable for finding materials and chests quicker and easier.
You can also look through the scope of sniper rifle or other high zoom scope to spot nearby resources. Chests and resources will be highlighted in the scope, although I think you have to be looking at the resource.
Planetary chests are probably the best way to farm for planetary materials though, rather than trying to find the materials that ‘grow’ randomly. Completing patrol missions on the planets will also net you 4 materials per mission, so this is also a really fast way to farm.
If you have region chests still to collect, which you probably will have if you are a new player, then these will net you 12 materials per chest. Region chests are gold coloured chests hidden throughout the various planets.
Heres a list of things that drop planetary materials and how much they drop (Updated for patch 22.214.171.124 – material drop rates reduced by 50%)
- Mini-Boss, the yellow bar bosses that appear in the world, the ones that drop chests once you kill them – 2 materials
- Patrol Missions – 2 materials
- Yellow bar named bosses that spawn near the end of Heroic Public Events – 8 materials
- Public Event chests (normal & heroic) – 2 materials
- Region chests – 8 materials
- Normal planetary chests – 2 materials (can drop as rare materials which don’t seem to be used for infusion)
